About Black Mamas Matter Alliance

The Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA) is a Black women-led cross-sectoral organization based in Atlanta, GA, dedicated to advancing Black maternal health, rights, and justice through comprehensive policy, research, and care initiatives. Operating as a global entity while maintaining deep roots in local communities, BMMA works across four strategic pillars to transform maternal health systems: changing policy through human rights frameworks that address maternal health inequity; cultivating innovative research methods grounded in Black community knowledge and talent; advancing holistic and comprehensive care approaches for Black mothers and birthing people; and shifting cultural narratives to amplify the voices and lived experiences of Black mamas. The organization convenes a diverse network of community-rooted organizations, clinicians, midwives, birth workers, advocates, and researchers to implement Black feminist praxis and respectful maternity care standards. BMMA has established itself as a catalytic force in the national Black Maternal Health Movement, raising over $2 million annually to support workforce development, fellowships, and job creation. The organization hosts the nationally recognized Black Maternal Health Conference and Training Institute, operates the Black Maternal Health Incubator Hub, and leads the annual Black Maternal Health Week campaign, celebrated across the country and internationally. Through strategic partnerships and expert testimony before national and international bodies, BMMA continues to position Black maternal health as a critical global movement, working toward a world where Black mothers have the rights, respect, and resources to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy.
