About National Black Food and Justice Alliance

The National Black Food and Justice Alliance (NBFJA) is a coalition of Black-led organizations based in Oakland, CA, dedicated to advancing Black food sovereignty, self-determining food economies, and land justice. Operating nationwide since 2015, NBFJA convenes partners and coordinates comprehensive strategies across three core focus areas: sovereignty and governance, self-determining food economies, and land justice.

The Alliance brings together hundreds of Black urban and rural farmers, organizers, and land stewards to map, assess, train, and deepen organizing and institution-building efforts protecting Black land and advancing food sovereignty. With deep expertise spanning Black food security, legal frameworks, financial systems, community organizing, and cultural amplification, NBFJA develops transformative solutions to systemic barriers facing Black communities.

Their work addresses critical challenges including Black land loss, reduced Black farming participation, and limited access to healthy food infrastructure in both urban and rural communities. NBFJA leverages community self-governance principles to shift power away from corporate-dominated food systems toward Black ownership and control across production, distribution, and monetization. The organization provides visibility to Black-led food and land work through mapping initiatives, resource directories, and leadership development programs. By centering healing, organizing, and resistance against anti-Blackness, NBFJA builds the nourishing and liberatory spaces Black communities need and deserve, creating pathways for intergenerational, urban-rural movements toward food and land liberation.
