About National Congress of Black Women Kansas City Chapter
The National Congress of Black Women Kansas City Chapter is a 501(c)(3) non-profit civic organization dedicated to advancing African American women through comprehensive educational, political, economic, and cultural development programs. Serving the Kansas City, Missouri community, NCBW-KC provides strategic leadership opportunities and decision-making positions across government, nonprofit organizations, and the private sector.
The organization operates as a nonpartisan voice on critical governance issues, particularly regarding the appointment and advancement of African American women at all levels of government. NCBW-KC actively increases African American women's participation in educational, political, economic, and social arenas through targeted programming and advocacy.
Key service areas include the B.R.I.D.G.E. Entrepreneurship Program, which empowers Black women entrepreneurs with access to resources, mentorship, and community support. The organization also administers the Annual Vibe Brilliantly Scholarship Program, awarding educational scholarships to high school seniors and current college students, with recipients receiving $1,000 annually toward tuition and education essentials.
Additionally, NCBW-KC hosts the Annual Women Girls Torch Carriers Conference, providing workshops on education, employment certification, and professional development. The organization engages in voter education and registration initiatives, policy advocacy, and research on critical issues affecting African American women, families, and youth. Under the founding leadership of Sylvya J. Stevenson, the Kansas City Chapter received its charter on November 7, 2013, and continues to empower Black women to utilize their voices in decision-making processes while developing local solutions to cultural, educational, economic, and political challenges.
